Offshore WordPress hosting means running your WordPress site on a server in a country other than your own, usually one with stronger privacy law or more predictable rules on takedowns. It is not the same as offshore WordPress development, which is about outsourcing the building of a site. This guide is about where the site lives, what changes when that place is Switzerland or Finland, and what offshore hosting cannot do for you.
The short version
Offshore WordPress hosting changes which country's law and courts reach your server. It does not change the law that applies to you, and it does not stop WordPress plugins from sending visitor data to third parties. If you want your WordPress site outside the EU and under Swiss data protection law, our Swiss WordPress plans start at EUR 22.90 a month, the same price as in Finland, with daily backups, free SSL and signup with only an email address.
What offshore WordPress hosting is, and what it is not
The country your server sits in decides which courts can order your host to take a site down or hand over data, which data protection law governs the host, and which legal process a foreign authority has to follow to get anything. That is the real value of offshore hosting: your server answers to a legal system you chose, not only the one you happen to live in.
What it does not do is put you above the law. You remain subject to the laws of the country you live in, and a lawful host still acts on valid orders from courts in its own jurisdiction. Our guide to offshore web hosting covers the wider picture, and our Hosting Jurisdiction Index scores fourteen countries on the laws that matter for hosting.
Why the location matters more for WordPress than for a static site
A static site holds little more than pages and images. A WordPress site usually holds personal data: commenters' names, email addresses and IP addresses, contact form submissions, user accounts, newsletter sign-ups and, with WooCommerce, customer orders and addresses. All of it lives in the database on your server, which puts it within reach of the courts where that server sits. Other laws can still apply: where your business operates, where your visitors are and how you process their data all play a part. Offshore hosting changes part of the legal picture, not all of it.
That database is the reason people look for offshore WordPress hosting in the first place. The most common mistake is assuming the server's location is the whole story.
Watch outYour plugins may not be offshore
Many WordPress themes and plugins load fonts, analytics, maps, captchas and embeds from US companies. Every one of those calls sends your visitor's IP address to a third party, wherever your server is. Moving your server offshore does nothing about that. Our guides to running WordPress without Google and Google Fonts and GDPR show how to find and remove those calls.
Switzerland or Finland for offshore WordPress hosting
We run WordPress hosting in both countries at the same price, so the choice comes down to jurisdiction rather than cost.
Outside the EUSwitzerland
Switzerland is not an EU member. Its data protection law is the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP), in force since 1 September 2023, and EU internal instruments do not apply there automatically. Being outside the EU does not exempt a provider from the EU e-Evidence Regulation if it offers services into the EU; our guide to the EU e-Evidence Regulation explains how that works.
Under our acceptable use policy for Switzerland, copyright complaints need a valid order enforceable in Switzerland, such as one from a competent Swiss court, and we do not act on informal takedown notices alone. Lawful adult content is permitted.
Our Swiss WordPress plans run in a Zurich data centre. Our guide to Swiss data protection law covers what the FADP protects.
Inside the EUFinland
Finland is an EU member with GDPR and strong constitutional protection for the secrecy of communications. It is the better fit if your visitors are mostly in Europe and you want EU law to apply. Our Finland rules differ between our two networks there, so check our acceptable use policy if copyright handling or adult content matters to your site. Finland vs Switzerland compares the two in depth.
Our WordPress plans
The same three plans are offered in Switzerland and Finland, at the same price in both:
| Plan | Price | Storage | Bandwidth | Domains | Databases |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | EUR 22.90 a month | 30 GB | 1 TB | 1 | 10 |
| Optimize | EUR 31.90 a month | 40 GB | 2 TB | 2 | 20 |
| Accelerate | EUR 47.90 a month | 50 GB | 3 TB | 3 | Unlimited |
Every plan includes unlimited email accounts, daily backups, a free SSL certificate, a one-click WordPress installer, a control panel, a site builder, DDoS protection on IPv4, 24/7 support and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The Start plan has ten times the compute resources of our shared hosting plans. You can see the full details on our WordPress hosting page.
You sign up with an email address and a password, with no ID, phone number or postal address. Bitcoin and Monero go through our own BTCPay Server, and you can also pay by card, PayPal or Wise. Our guide to hosting with Monero covers the payment side.
What to check before choosing offshore WordPress hosting
Whichever host you pick, these are the questions worth answering first:
1. Where is the company, not just the server? A company registered in one country can be ordered by that country's courts, even for a server elsewhere. Check both.
2. What do they ask for at signup? If the host collects your name, address and ID, that data sits in its systems under its law. Our guide to no-KYC hosting explains the difference.
3. How do they handle copyright complaints? Look for a published procedure that says whose court orders count. Our guide to DMCA takedowns and jurisdiction shows what to look for.
4. Where do the backups go? A copy of your database is still your database. Ask whether backups stay in the same country as the server.
5. Is your domain registration offshore too? The site can sit in Switzerland while the domain is registered in your name through a registrar elsewhere.
Moving an existing WordPress site
- Order a WordPress plan in Switzerland or Finland.
- Lower your DNS TTL a day ahead, so the switch takes effect quickly.
- Copy the files and database. A migration plugin moves everything in one go. For a manual move, copy the full WordPress directory, including
wp-contentand custom files such as.htaccess, import the database, and updatewp-config.phpwith the new database details. - Test the site on the new server before you switch.
- Point your DNS to the new server. Our guide to migrating without downtime covers the cutover, and how to set up a WordPress site covers a fresh install.
FAQ
Is offshore WordPress hosting legal?
Yes. Hosting a site in another country is legal and common. What you publish still has to be lawful where you live and where the server is, and a lawful host acts on valid orders from courts in its own jurisdiction.
Is offshore WordPress hosting slower?
Distance adds a little latency. A Zurich or Finland server is quick for European visitors and slower for visitors far away. Caching helps a lot. A CDN helps more, but it also brings a third party back into the picture, so weigh that against why you chose offshore hosting.
Does offshore hosting hide who owns my site?
Not on its own. Your domain registration, payment method and the site's content can all identify you. Offshore hosting decides which law reaches the server; it does not make you anonymous.
Is WordPress hosting in Switzerland more expensive than in Finland?
Not with us. Our three WordPress plans cost the same in both countries, from EUR 22.90 a month.
Can I get a refund if it is not right for me?
Yes. Our WordPress hosting comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
