How to cPanel – Create a Subdomain

You can manage subdomain records for your domain easily through the cPanel portal. In this guide, we will walk you through how to create a subdomain for your domain in cPanel for your Packetra hosting.

This article is only applicable to those who have an account with Packetra and it assumes that you are already logged into the cPanel. Don’t have a hosting account yet? If you already have one feel free to login to your portal, click the cPanel hosting service and use one of the quick actions to log onto your cPanel to follow the guide below.

First, under the Domains section, click the Domains button (globe icon) for this is where we will create subdomain record for the hosted domain.

Next, you want to click the blue Create A New Domain. This is where we create the subdomain record for the main domain (also this is where you can add another domain to your account if the package allows).

Next, you select Registered Domain as this article assumes you already have a registered domain linked to this account. You will type in your Domain field your <subdomain>.yourdomain. If you type anything else but your main domain it is considered as additional domain and not a subdomain record. Lastly you can either share the public_html folder for your subdomain or host it outside in your home so the path becomes /home/<username>/<subdomain>. We suggest that you leave it outside your public_html to prevent traversal to the directory directly. When you are ready you click the blue Submit to create the record.

Finally, if subdomain record was successful you will see a green confirmation box and you will see your subdomain appear in the list underneath your hosted domain.

If you are using a 3rd Party DNS service such as CloudFlare you need to create a matching A record to the subdomain you just created.
If you are using our Nameservers then the subdomain is automatically created and you don’t have to do anything else.

You can now visit your https://<subdomain>.<yourdomain> to view your new subdomain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my subdomain get an SSL certificate automatically?
If you are using Packetra’s nameservers, AutoSSL will attempt to cover your new subdomain on its next run. You can also manually run AutoSSL from the SSL/TLS Status page. Check out our guide on How to Install SSL Certificates in cPanel for more details.

Can I create multiple subdomains?
Yes. You can create as many subdomains as your hosting plan allows. Each one can have its own folder and content independent of your main domain.

What is the difference between a subdomain and an addon domain?
A subdomain is part of your existing domain (e.g. blog.yourdomain.com). An addon domain is a completely separate domain hosted on the same account. If you type anything other than your main domain in the Domain field, cPanel treats it as an addon domain.

Good to Know
We recommend hosting your subdomain files outside of public_html to prevent direct path traversal to the directory. Additionally, if you are using a third-party DNS provider like Cloudflare, remember to create a matching A record pointing your new subdomain to your hosting server IP, otherwise the subdomain will not resolve. If you later decide to remove a subdomain, you can delete it from the same Domains page, but make sure to back up any files in its directory first.
